Knuckles the Echidna is named after the spikes coming out of his knuckles, two on each hand. He lives in seclusion on Angel Island and guards the Master Emerald day and night. Besides protecting the Master Emerald, he is also an experienced treasure hunter. He is one of the physically strongest characters in the series, if not the strongest. He can glide by trapping air under his outspread dreadlocks. He is friends with Sonic and Tails, but friendship with Sonic is tense. He also has a rivalry with Rouge, both being devout treasure hunters.
